Egypt’s prime minister, Ahmed Nazif, is facing growing criticism over his perceived absence from the country’s public life as he fills in for President Hosni Mubarak, who is in Germany recovering from surgery. Mr Nazif’s low profile has led many to ask who actually makes the decisions in Egypt apart from the president, amid speculation as to the future of the presidency ahead of elections next year. The prime minister was blasted in the press for not saying more upon the death of the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Sheikh Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, on March 10. As per tradition, the head of state was expected to have declared three days of mourning, but Mr Nazif did not…...…”

Mr. Clean will not take any decisions. He is frightened of exceeding whatever authority he may have been given, if any. He was appointed a figurehead caretaker. If he gave any indication that he takes his new “authority” seriously, he will be out. It is the Arab thing: whether in matters of state or of corporations, the leaders (or ministers or CEOs) amass all powers in their own hands. The caretaker, as some wags might say, is not expected to take a whizz without permission.
