A Travesty of Democracy, Strasbourg of Arabia…………

Arab Parliament urges Swiss to reconsider minaret ban ……………..”

“The Arab Parliament urged Switzerand on Tuesday to reconsider its decision to ban the building of minarets for fear it might "fuel racism" in Europe. The decision reflects "the sentiments of hatred and animosity towards Islam and Muslims felt by racist groups and extreme right-wing groups in Europe,"……....”

I am more interested here in this so-called “Arab Parliament” than in the minaret issue.
They are trying to ape the European Union, with the false trappings of a “parliament”. They have chosen Damascus as the eventual permanent home of it. So, the absolute tribal monarchs, and the absolute despots who do not allow elections, and those who do would make sure who is elected, are serious about this travesty of democracy. There are about three Arab states that have elections where the rulers do not completely rig the voting. In one of these three states, Lebanon, foreign powers intervene, with help from their local surrogates, to try and determine who wins. This has been the case since 1958 when American money was poured in- it was the case in 2009 when Saudi-American money overwhelmed Iranian money, but in the end nothing changed on the ground: one side won an electoral majority and the other side retained a popular majority.
I say scrape this body that was created to act as a fig leaf for lack of democracy. Saudi Arabia does not allow any elections for anything, not even for dog-catcher, student government, or the PTA; yet it has representatives in this “Arab Parliament” appointed by the royalty. The same goes for some other states. Several states have parliaments that are at least half-appointed (Bahrain, Jordan), which means the oligarchy ALWAYS gets its way) in these cases literally and metaphorically “gets its way” with the people, if you get my meaning.)
Cheers and Happy New Year
