A Farewell to Russian Missiles, a Welcome to Saudi Money?…………

“Saudi Arabia is seeking to extract a Russian pledge not to go through with a contracted shipment of advanced surface-to-air missiles to Iran, as part of an agreement for a larger purchase of Russian weapons, according to diplomats with knowledge of the talks. The proposed Saudi arms purchase would total at least $2bn (€1.4bn, £1.3bn) and possibly as much as $7bn……..
“We all know the Saudis buy weapons as a bribe to the great power to support them,” said Mr Pukhov………” Financial Times

Alles Klar.
And I have been racking my brain trying to understand why all these advanced weapons are being purchased when they will never be used. I thought they only bought them so that some potentate could get the fat commissions (called bribes in impolite and less genteel company, but not here, not by me). Now I understand there are two reasons, at least.
I recall right after the Iran-Iraq War ended there were reports of the same tactics being used by some Gulf states to keep the mullahs in Iran from re-arming. They were worrying about the wrong enemy, because weeks later Saddam Hussein struck south.
