Wages of a "Date": A Seattle Judgment in Qateef
“A judge in Qateef (Eastern Saudi Arabia) has sentenced a young man to attend Quranic classes, memorize three chapters of the Quran, and spend 10 hours working for a charity. The man was caught alone with a young woman in a public place, a crime usually punishable by flogging and prison in Saudi Arabia. The judge said his goal is to replace the severe punishments that were initially prescribed in order to correct behavior, not to insult and humiliate people.....”
An unusual judge by Saudi standards, or by many other Middle East standards; for any type of fun other than eating or singing the praises of some prince is frowned upon. One can get in some fine serious trouble trying to have any other kind of fun.
But is that judge really Saudi? How can we be certain that he is not a Seattle judge on loan? What the American right wing calls a "Capuccino-sipping liberal judge", and a Seahawks fan to boot? (I almost added “she”).
And whatever happened to the young woman?
They were both lucky it didn't happen (whatever it is that did not happen) in Riyadh or its environs.
