On Al-azhar, a Fascist Mufti, Shi’as, and Petro-Tourism

"During a meeting with Saudi students: Mufti of al-Azhar denies that there is or can be a presence or place for Shi’as in Egypt..We will not accept the spread of Shi’ism….”
Interesting talk by Dr. Tantawi, tailor-made for his audience (Saudi students), and those higher ups back home. But how did he know there were no Shi’a students among those Saudi students? How does he know they don’t send Shi’as abroad to study?
The irony is that this government-appointed shaikh leads an institution that was established by a Shi’a dynasty that ruled Egypt for a long time (the Fatimids).
But that is alright, summer is upon us, and the thirsty, hungry and repressed peoples of over there are heading to Egypt, flush with money, to buy their fun (all the kinds of fun that are officially banned at home). And they are willing to pay well….to fill their hunger and quench their thirst from the bounty of the Nile. The good shaikh probably knows that too, and he wants to make them feel right at home.
Cheers
